I’m Sheryl Lazarus and this is my personal collection of fashion pictures from a hundred years ago. In the 1910s, practicality and over-the-top styles collided to create fashions that play well even today.
I became fascinated with this time period because my grandmother kept a diary during her teens from 1911-1914. In it she mentioned outfits she bought or was making. I post each entry one hundred years to the day after she wrote it at A Hundred Years Ago.

As my Mom was born in 1905, this will be fun to follow.
It is fun to picture how our relatives might have once worn outfits similar to these.

With one of my grandmothers being born in 1897 and the other in 1907, this will be great to give me a sense of what they (or their family members) might have worn at the time.
I’m thinking that it might be interesting to occasionally include pictures of children’s clothes from back then. I’ll have to see what I can find.

What a wonderful idea! And I love these pictures! I’ve always wondered about the clothes that my great-grandma, Rosa and her sister are wearing in the one photo I have of her. Rosa wears black and I assumed it’s because she was in mourning (lost one of her sons in 1902). But her sister that stands just behind her wears something completely different. Maybe, if you stop by another time, could you take a look at that pic (and sorry if I sound presumptuous or forward)? I’m always trying to learn more about that photo and the people in it.

It’s always wonderful to hear when someone enjoys this blog. Thanks for taking a moment to write the nice note. I also think that the dress your great-grandma was wearing looks like she was in mourning. Do you have any information about when her husband or other close relatives died? It might give you another clue that would support (or refute) this theory.
Rosa lost a son, Freddie, when he was 4 years old. That was in 1902. He would’ve been in this photo if alive – at least that is what I’ve come to believe.

How very cool! My daughter and I belong to a group that costumes up for various events around town. My next appearance is at an art festival, and I will be wearing a 1918-1919 style outfit that I am currently making. Thanks for the eye candy!
