Welcome!
I’m Sheryl Lazarus and this is my personal collection of fashion pictures from a hundred years ago. In the 1910s, practicality and over-the-top styles collided to create fashions that play well even today.
I became fascinated with this time period because my grandmother kept a diary during her teens from 1911-1914. In it she mentioned outfits she bought or was making. I post each entry one hundred years to the day after she wrote it at A Hundred Years Ago.

This is going to be a fun complement to Grandma’s diary.
Thanks! I’m looking forward to sharing more pictures.
As my Mom was born in 1905, this will be fun to follow.
It is fun to picture how our relatives might have once worn outfits similar to these.
I would agree…a nice complement to your diary blog. Have fun with it!
Thank you!
With one of my grandmothers being born in 1897 and the other in 1907, this will be great to give me a sense of what they (or their family members) might have worn at the time.
I’m thinking that it might be interesting to occasionally include pictures of children’s clothes from back then. I’ll have to see what I can find.
hi Sheryl, I accepted ‘One Lovely Blogger Award’ and in turn posted your lovely new Website on my list of Bloggers others should check out. You can see your nomination here

I’m honored that you thought this site was worthy of including on the list. Thank you!
What a wonderful idea! And I love these pictures! I’ve always wondered about the clothes that my great-grandma, Rosa and her sister are wearing in the one photo I have of her. Rosa wears black and I assumed it’s because she was in mourning (lost one of her sons in 1902). But her sister that stands just behind her wears something completely different. Maybe, if you stop by another time, could you take a look at that pic (and sorry if I sound presumptuous or forward)? I’m always trying to learn more about that photo and the people in it.
Wonderful blog (s)!
Sue
It’s always wonderful to hear when someone enjoys this blog. Thanks for taking a moment to write the nice note. I also think that the dress your great-grandma was wearing looks like she was in mourning. Do you have any information about when her husband or other close relatives died? It might give you another clue that would support (or refute) this theory.
Rosa lost a son, Freddie, when he was 4 years old. That was in 1902. He would’ve been in this photo if alive – at least that is what I’ve come to believe.
Sheryl, I nominated this fashion blog for both the Liebster Award and the WordPress Family Award. http://thefamilykalamazoo.wordpress.com/2013/05/11/aw-shucks-and-shout-outs/
Thanks for nominating this blog. I’m honored that you think it is worthy of the award.
How very cool! My daughter and I belong to a group that costumes up for various events around town. My next appearance is at an art festival, and I will be wearing a 1918-1919 style outfit that I am currently making. Thanks for the eye candy!
What a fun group! I bet you’ll look awesome in the 1918-19 style outfit.
:>)
Have you thought about putting these on Pinterest? (Perhaps you already have!!)
Thanks for the suggestion. I didn’t know about Pinterest when I started this blog. If I ever find a little spare time, I need to figure out Pininterest and how to get these on it.
what a lovely space you have here, Sheryl. What a gift to have your grandma’s teenage diary!
I’m glad you enjoy it. And, thank you for taking a moment to write the nice note.
Just found you and really appreciate all that you’re sharing and your grandmother’s wonderful diary. I’m a historical costumer so seeing these are wonderful. I’ve been having my costume blog printed into a book each year and maybe someday it will be a treasure to someone else.

Thanks for the nice note. Your blog is awesome with lots of great information and pictures. It’s a really good idea to get your blog printed into a book. I haven’t done anything yet to permanently preserve the information in my blogs, but I know that I need to do something someday.
Sheryl, you really should make it into a book just incase this website ever crashes and burns. I used sharedbooks.com and printed them in the softbound. It wasn’t that expensive either. I wrote up two blog entries on how I did it too.
Val
It always seems like I’m busy working on tomorrow’s post, but I know that you are absolutely right and that I need to find time to preserve what I’ve done. What are the dates of the entries on how you printed them up?
Here are part 1 and part 2. Part 1 was my first couple years posts, then Part 2 was a couple more years.

I’ve since done a 3rd book but didn’t write a post on that one. It’s really nice that you can carry it around and show people that might not be online to see what you do. And it might make a nice gift to family members.
Val
Thanks so much for the info. Your books look great–and it sounds so easy.
Hi Sheryl,
Wow, I love your blog. Fashion throughout the ages is a passion of mine. I am thrilled to have stumbled upon this!!

Sheryl, I don’t know how I missed this link on your Diary Blog but I’m just thrilled to have found it.
I’m glad you found it. There are many more fashion pictures in women’s magazine from a hundred-years-ago than I could possibly use to illustrate A Hundred Years Ago posts, so I decided that I needed a separate “home” for them.
This is so wonderful! Really nice pictures and congratulations on the blog. I too love other time periods of fashion, and this one is becoming one of my favorites 🙂
I have a lot of fun doing this blog, and it’s wonderful to hear that you enjoy it.
